关于"A group of"
陈博士:
我想请问一下,void deck 是什么意思?有时我读报时会看到这个字。不过我没把那个句子抄下来,没法举例。
还有一个我常在广播听到,叫做查口 choke cold 什么的,不知道它真正的字是什么?
Chua Cai
Chua Cai:
(1) “Void Deck”是新加坡通用词,指政府组屋的“底层”。
(2)你在收音机听到的是不是“Encore”?如果是,它的意思是“Repeat!Again!”(再来一次!),表示对歌曲或表演的赞美。

陈博士:
请问下列二句何者正确?
(1) A group of monkeys has escaped from...
(2) A group of monkeys have escaped from...
从一本参考书“Making Sense of English Usage”,Federal Publications, 1991 得知:
“The noun can be used with either a singular of a plural verb depending on the sense. A singular verb occurs when the persons or things are considered as a unity, or to be acting as a unity: The group is determined to fight against injustice. A plural verb occurs when the persons or things are considered as a set of individuals: The group were divided in their sympathies.”但还是不明白GROUP的用法。
Mr Tan
Dear Mr Tan,
第二句“A group of monkeys”(Monkeys in a group)(复数),动词也是复数,所以“have”对。
联邦出版社解释“The group”用法时是将该名词当集合名词(Collective Noun)解。更好的例子是“jury”(陪审团)。当“个体单位”时是单数,如:
(1) The jury has decided to adjourn the trial until next month.
当考虑到每个成员时,“jury”变成复数,如:
(2) The jury were divided in their opinions, so the verdict was not unanimous.
