Which Are Correct?

Dr Tan:

Which of the following sentences are correct?

  (1) The glass was broken by someone.

  (2) The glass has been broken by someone.

  (3) No action was taken against the matter.

  (4) No action was taken about the matter.

  (5) No action was taken regarding the matter.

Jonnie

Jonnie,

These five sentences are all free from grammatical errors.

The subjects of (1) and (2) are not important in the active voice. They can therefore be omitted in the passive sentences, that is :

  (1) The glass was broken.

  (2) The glass has been broken.
